Becoming Mother | An In Home Postpartum Session

I had the honor of connecting and documenting this new mama on her sweet journey through her postpartum.

There is always a beautiful energy whenever I walk into a postpartum session; the energy is calm, full of love and excitement.

During the session there’s this wonderful slowdown that happens, when mamas are encouraged to sit down and soak in for a bit. The time beforehand may have been chaotic getting ready for the session, but now it’s the time to merely be present.

I love watching mamas gently stroke their baby’s head and hair, or gaze deeply into their eyes. There is something sacred about watching a mama connect and love their baby. These are moments we deserve to have captured, to hold on to and experience as our babies grow older.

People often say “Soak it in, these moments won’t last”, and I have my reservations around saying you should savor EVERY moment (because let’s admit it; parenthood can be hard! Not every moment is beautiful and gushy!). However, I love that the experience of having a portrait session allows us to have the beautiful “soak it up, soak it in” time, even if it’s just for an hour. It’s a beautiful excuse to slowdown, and savor everything about this present moment.

Do you agree? Do you find you slowdown and soak in moments more during your portrait sessions?
