5 Reasons to Take Pregnancy Portraits | CT Birth Photographer

Pregnancy. It’s magical and beautiful, and also completely exhausting, challenging, and full of not-so-fun moments (for me it was constant heartburn the second half of my first pregnancy).

Can I tell you a little secret? With BOTH my pregnancies, I almost didn’t have pregnancy portraits taken.

Can I tell you another little secret? I’m SO glad that during each pregnancy a friend insisted on taking those portraits for my family and I, and that I have these moments to hold onto, forever.

I think that everyone is so excited to dream up their newborn session, that pregnancy portraits get put on the backburner in their mind.

I will say, the common theme among my families who choose to have a pregnancy session is that they are very glad they had those moments captured.

If you’re on the fence about documenting YOUR pregnancy, here are my 5 reasons to persuade you to book that session.

#1. Honor your body; it is powerful and strong.

Even if you don’t feel “glowing”, your body is doing something absolutely magical and growing a tiny human. By documenting this season, this time, you honor your body, it’s power, and it’s strength. Artful portraits are truly a wonderful way to celebrate, reflect, and honor yourself.

For those who had difficulties getting pregnant, or became pregnant after loss, these portraits are a way to honor your journey, to reflect upon it, and process.

#2. You’ll look and feel beautiful.

Even if you aren’t feeling like you are “glowing”, a professional photographer will make sure to document you in a beautiful and flattering way.

This experience can also be a pampering one! Pregnancy sessions can be a reason to head to the salon to get hair done, or nails done. It can be a reason to buy a new outfit for yourself. This session is a reason for you to focus on yourself.

#3. Connecting with your partner

As photographer, it is a magical and humbling experience to watch and experience the love and connection unfold during a session; especially pregnancy sessions. For an hour of time you forget about anything else except this moment, right here, and connecting on a deeper level with your partner. Your love, your connection, and your excitement; it all shines through into the images we create together (which will then be enjoyed for years and years to come).

#4. Your children will value these moments

Now that my son is 5, we often reflect and look at pictures from when he was a baby, and when I was pregnant with him. He sees the moments of my husband hugging my belly; the biggest grin on his face. My son sees our love as a family, when we were excitedly awaiting his arrival earth side.

Just as family portraits are important to our growing children, pregnancy portraits are as well.

#5. Pregnancy portraits look amazing paired with newborn portraits, (especially in an heirloom album!)

Not quite sure how you’ll enjoy your pregnancy portraits? Create an heirloom album with both your pregnancy portraits, and your newborn portraits.

I love designing heirloom albums with both pregnancy and newborn portraits within it. Sometimes certain poses we captured during the pregnancy session are mirrored within the newborn session, and it’s beautiful to see them displayed together.

With an heirloom album, you’ll have a wonderful keepsake to enjoy your cherished moments for years and years to come.
